What LED's should i go for?

Postby Malawi Joe on 18 Apr 2012 16:53

I really want to set up a softie/LPS tank during the summer
This all depends if I can get a job and what college ill be going too :?

Anyway theres no way in hell Ill be allowed a 4-6 bulb T5 fixture or a MH as electricity bills are high enough :!:
So Ill have to go the LED route
Ive been researching a few TMC aquaray 600's 3-4 strips (2blue 2 white) Seen a fair few great looking tanks with these
LEDPacifics High power 1W CREE, Bridgelux light bars http://www.ledpacific.com/aquarium-ligh ... lue-460nm/

Or their PAR38 Cree bulbs mixed with either marine/reef blue aquarays
http://www.ledpacific.com/aquarium-ligh ... lue-460nm/
Which would be best?
Id rather conseal them all under the hood which wouldnt really work with the bulbs

Im Looking at a 200l tank
Prefreble 2'x2'x2'
Thanks
Joe

i wouldn`t go with neither, and you be needing to give them other lights to supplement them! I recommend the AI led units! I think they are 400 yoyo! cheaper than the radions anyways! or if you look up ultimatereef.net you might come up with something nice second hand!
This is a drug and im getting addicted little by little.

One kessil 150 won't cover a 4 foot tank I was looking into them you would need 3-4 to avoid dark spots in the tank kessil is bringing out the 350 soon which should be more powerful.

Perhaps a silly question but how would you best fit a quadspec Par38 lamp over your tank without running the risk of frying your fish?

It illuminates a 4' tank but the usable light is only a spread of 20-24'' which is exactly what Im looking for.
There are a good few videos on their website on reviews of the lights
Most have them on 2' cubes but one has 2 of them on 90g 4' tank and it looks amazing :P

A gooseneck unit is would work for the PAR30 quad spec.
It simply attaches to the side of the tank meaning you dont have hook it too the ceiling or have wires stretching up above the tank
Thanks
Joe

two for a 90 gallon is not going to be good enough there are several threads on reef central were people have had to add a third or are struggling to grow sps with them one of the main issues is par penetration in deep tanks the A350 was just released this week in the US.

If your looking for Led's these are not the answer unless you have a shallow nano tank for a bigger tank the A350 or another Led unit is needed.

I was reading about the a350 there well what is know about
Its for sale for 400$ :o
That could be an option if it doesnt go way up in price when released over here :?
Would the 150 be affective over a 2'x2' clearseal tank?
Ive become doubtful now but I've read on a few sites it covers 24''x24'' area
Thanks
Joe

I doubt 1 unit would cover a 2ftx2ft tank I emailed kessil directly as I was thinking of getting these lights

I have a an aquarium that is 48" (4ft) x 18.8" with a depth of 29.3" and the reply I got:

Thank you for your interest in our LED aquarium lighting.

Normally we would recommend 3-5 lights for your type of tank. In your case if the tank is 29.3" tall and you are growing low light corals at the bottom, 4 would be best.

Regards,

David Lowry

Depending on your depth of tank and rock formation you may get away with 1 unit but it would be best to contact kessil directly.

I would also wait as the fact that they released a new unit means there is a very good chance the A150 could drop in price. the Ai sol dropped by $100 in the USA a few months back.
