DIY live rock

Postby spons on 16 Nov 2012 21:26

Hi all,
Has anyone made DIY live rock? If yes, i would like to hear about their experiences. Also what would be the best materials and what would be the mixing ratio.
I read on some US forum that they use oister shells, cement and gritting salt.
Thanks...

I think i am going to give it a go and make some DIY live rock. I would need about 50 - 60 kg's because i have about 40 kg live rock at the moment. So together it would be about 100 kg. I think that's plenty for 6ft tank. And i think i am going to stick with this guys recipe:

Live rock from the forum or Donedeal around e7 per kg. Around e420. Better but still not where i want it to be :(

2 bags of 25kg Crushed Oyster Shells e24

How long will these rocks have to be soaked before they are suitable for your aquarium plus how long before they become " live"? Think maybe this is the way to make my arch, maybe with a plastic " bar " to reinforce it

If done like in the video you would not need a bar in it for the arch

I am thinking off 2 archs also this way as is very hard to find anywhere

Don't think you will see much difference when it goes live and colours up nicely

Very good idea

About 2 months in tap water and regular water changes. Test the ph after to mach the tap waters. You simply seeding it with your existing live rock- place it on top in your marine tank or something lake that.

Thanks for your answers lads makes me a little more determined. Think I will have to use a plastic rod or similar because I want the arch to span roughly diagonally from the front corner to the opposite rear corner like some of the stone arches found in Arches national park, Utah ( really liking either Delicate Arch or South Window Arch found in this national park. I can't post a link as I'm on the phone but try to google it to see want I'm after :? ) Will make it a little 'rougher' but is the look I'm after
If I leave the arch outside in sea water instead of fresh water will that help seed the rock? Maybe I'm being too arty farty but will give it a go- maybe try a few different arches and choose my favourite later
