i could'nt tell from the pic if the axolotl is ill
gill size varies for a number of reasons, high oxygen content in the water means less work for the gills so they tend to be smaller, i have often seen a number axolotls in the one tank with different sized gills , possibly down to genetics? but good water quality is a must with them or they will suffer and become ill, do a water test and check for any fungal infections or damage around the gills, it might also just be the angle the photo was taken......
and above all, enjoy them , interesting and amusing in their antics

sorry all, didnt mean to hi-jack the post and on the ill part, pic aint the best cause wanted to capture the moment palling over with the loach , dimmed lights and the tank walls had a bit of algea... read a while back in relation to any signs of distress to watch out for : patchy milky skin, gills tipping more forward, bent tip of the tail..
have been watching like a hawk, you do get paranoid when looking about the health and issue categories, been lurking around the forum for a bit now

i had axolotl for 2 or 3 years. it grew to about 15-20cm. i kept it in my community tropical tank. i fed it with earthworms or frozen sliced fish. it died attacked by a big hungry pleco while i was on holiday and my friend was minding the tank
