To dose iodine or not???

Postby silverdollar on 01 Mar 2011 23:40

Just curious as to how many people dose iodine into their reef tanks, As its hard to test for and most say waterchanges are enough, what benefits are there to dosing for various types of corals

I personally do, tank running for almost 2 years at this stage I've always had problem with growing coraline algae and my rocks stayed the generic ugly brown colour, so after a lot of research I now dose with Salifert Iodide, I only dose half of what they reccommend on the bottle however and dose two days before my weekly water change.

It's made a big difference in the tank - coraline is growing on the rocks/powerhead and my shrimp are shedding a lot better and easier.

It has also helped me to stablise my calcium/magnesium/alkalinity and such, used to have such bad problems with keeping those parameters correct, now it's not so bad. No longer keep it as a reef though as I'm setting up a 200litre at the moment just need my skimmer, powerhead and to brace the cabinate a bit and then I'm ready. I'll more than likely to continue dosing with the iodide in this tank as the results are good.

I dose the Pohls PIF, one drop per 100L every week. The I in PIF is the Idoine.

If you can't measure it don't add it. Thats just my opinion.
Iodine is toxic if overdosed. It's debated by experts if it should be added or not so it's a tough call to whats right or wrong thing to do.
Iodine gets into your tank through food and water changes.(enough though who knows)
It's easier and safer not to add it so I don't bother.

This is interesting, since starting my new shallow tank last October I've had very little new coralline algae growth. I always put it not to the shallowness of my tank and the resulting intensity from the lights.

Might try some of that PIF stuff.

Hi just join the forum!

I run a 600 litre marine and i dosed iodine for almost a year to results i thought were good! about 6 months ago i stopped and BAMM no difference at all! everything is the same, Coral/fish health, Algie, and all other water parimeters! Besides its known to be very toxic when over dosed even slightly and especially to xenia species!! and it cant even be tested correctly! I wouldnt use it any more but thats just me opinion and experience i guess!!
